Gilbert and George are an artist collaborator duo. They embody themselves, their thoughts and their feelings within their work.
They began colaberating whilst in Central St Martians together and now at the ripe ages of 68 and 69 they are still producing phenomenal pieces of work.
The oldly, quirky duo that eat in the same restaurant every day just down from their apartment, for me stand out from other collaborators. They place themselves within their pieces of art like living structures, making them the art.
They have gone against fingers of authority in their time and have a slight gay imagery about pieces of their work. The church references a lot through their work. They developed a hatred for the church at young ages. It looks as though at times mocking, poking fun at the church within their work "sonofabitch", but it could just be adolescent rebelliousness coming through slightly.
"Visual letters to the viewer, us speaking to the viewer" the duo has said in a singular voice.
I enjoy the colour popping works of art, it is very 1950's style pop art. For older guys they have produced some spectacular modern art collections. I enjoy the pieces hugely but I think some of that is down to how quirky the duo are and how well I know they both work together.
